In Benjamin Hierro's painting series to be shown at Onda - Bodegon -
the lush components of the subjects jump exuberantly to life, conveying both meanings of the term.  In painting terminology,
"bodegone" refers to any still life painting while in Spanish, the
word "bodegón" means tavern.  Even though the elements of still life
are present, the result is far from still - not necessarily inebriated but definitely expressing heightened senses.

Born in Mexico City, Hierro has lived and worked in
Venezuela for almost thirty years.  His paintings are created in the
precise tradition of Mexican draftsmanship and enlivened with
Caribbean whimsy.  The tropical jungle, full of vegetation, fruit,
birds, serpents, is like a fantastic living being, the goddess of all
nature, mother and lover of all creatures.

KAREN ESLER is a well-established artist in the Portland area who has shown in the MARK WOOLLEY GALLERY and annually at the Cascade Aids Auction. Her work in this show demonstrates the sublime interaction between the female body and nature in NUDES AND OTHER LANDSCAPES. Using a soft brush and a muted palette, Esler creates on canvas the "Normal-ness" inherent in the female nude and in nature. Esler States: "Their very normal-ness is what makes them exceptional to me right now. But, besides all that, these are the images I love to paint. A 'Natural' relationship between the female nude and the landscape exists that is both literal and metaphoric. I move back and forth between two almost as though I were painting the same thing.

Using the inherently familiar form of the tree in nature, Gross pursues the connection we as humans share with trees, both consciously and subconsciously. The artist's landscapes are not familiar in the sense of traditional objective reality; yet the viewer understands them as universal notions of landscapes. Gross states of his work: "I have one general goal as a painter. I seek to create moments of sublime light and color. An exact copy of one place is not needed, instead I use the visual library of my memory to guide me in recreating the feeling of a moment in time...my tree paintings are not portraits of specific trees but are about the inherent character of trees".

In the same way that rocks channel and bend the energy of a river, the tiles squeeze and redirect the space of the wall. If it works, then whatever images these paintings remind you of – clouds, flowers, landscapes – are not pictures of a far away place, but they are here and now. It makes the experience real.

Focus Group is a selection of sculptures, photographs and video from a series called Market Penetration, begun in 2003. The work is produced by "Houston" a logo, a brand, a group or an individual. The work has the look and feel of consumer-grade mass-production, and along with the logo on each piece, suggests "product." Like a product line, the pieces share a color palette, materials and textures. They act as props arranged to create a narrative, a psychological space, a sense of a ritualistic moments caught in stasis. The elements diagram the American Spirit, through the form of 'product' and branded experience.

In conjunction with Portland Modern, Tilt Gallery and Project Space is pleased to present new work by Jonathan Leach and Amy Steel.

Leach’s paintings vibrate with color, calling to mind the pulsating landscape of strip malls and billboards. The spaces created by commercial saturation are reorganized, allowing the viewer to interpret this environment with a new visual vocabulary.

Steel uses soft, tactile sculptures and printed mediums to investigate pop iconography in contemporary American culture. Her installation uses humor to exacerbate this consumption driven world.
