Sound and Video Projection Installation

Room Works presents two site-specific media installation pieces that are generated from the environment in which they are presented. Scaffold and On Axis are both works that seek to effect a mutual transformation of the physical space and of the viewer’s (or listener’s) attention to the present place and time.

Scaffold - is a piece for video projection consisting of thin lines of white light that trace contours of the interior architecture of the exhibition space. Individual lines are animated slowly over the room’s surface, extending its dimensions and creating alternative geometries of the space. These slices of light create interactions of spill and shadow along the walls that invite a new attention to details of the room’s surfaces, as well as a deepening awareness of the perceptual dimensions of the space, of place, and of presence. Scaffold evokes post-minimalist concepts of pure structure and principles of organization, as well as more poetic associations with astronomy and navigation by the constellations.

On Axis (for Graham) - is a four-channel sound installation designed to accompany Scaffold in this exhibition. On Axis consists of field recordings of the “room tone” of the empty space prior to the exhibition. These recordings are edited, processed and arranged into a quiet and intermittent series of studies for different acoustic qualities, or perceived qualities, of the room. Certain tensions and relationships are accentuated in the work – between outside and inside sound; concrete and tonal elements; and constant versus transitive qualities of sound in the space.

Andy Graydon (b. 1971, Maui, Hawaii) is an artist and filmmaker based in New York City. His work focuses on the interaction of sound, image, and environment. In his recent work Andy is interested in creating what he calls "science fiction ecologies" by engaging with the speculative and transformational qualities within an environment. Graydon has presented work internationally in programs such as Ausland, Berlin, and the Worldwide Video Festival, Amsterdam. Recent exhibitions and performances in New York City include work at The New Museum, LMAKprojects gallery, Diapason, Art In General, Participant Inc gallery, Galeria Galou, The Dumbo Arts Festival, Millennium Film Workshop, White Box gallery, and Tonic.
