Natural
Synthesis references the natural systems of parasitic plant
life and their need to coexist with their host. The viewer is confronted
with a disorienting sense of weight and orientation as the growth logic
of plant life has been altered by shifting (or removing) the effects of
gravity. Illusionary acts of tension and the forced fusion between what
is seemingly organic in form versus what is clearly machined will struggle
in a symbiotic state. The conflict between the two can be discovered in
their function; the organic is predicated by survival where as the machined
is predicated by efficiency. Matthew Mitros was born in Philadelphia in 1978. Upon completing his BFA in Ceramics at Pennsylvania State University, he was an Artist-In-Residence at Arrowmont School of Arts & Crafts as well as The Archie Bray Foundation, and has exhibited work throughout North America and Europe. Mitros holds an MFA from the University of Washington, and teaches Ceramics and Sculpture at South Seattle Community College. |
