A
clan of hyenas pause in the unsettling space, their eyes illuminated in
the surrounding darkness. These predators are insidious hunters and diligent
killers, wanting to feed. As they prepare for their prey, we realize who
they’re waiting for: us. Working with emotions such as pain, fear, separation
and repression; Jackson exhibits an installation of exquisitely crafted
hyenas lingering in the darkness. Captivated by the hierarchies of the
animal world, Jackson contemplates the roles of both predator and prey
seeking to question and remind us of our primal, mortal nature. Roxanne Jackson received her MFA from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln (2004). Since graduate school, she has exhibited work in various juried and invitational exhibitions. At the recent NCECA* Conference in Portland, Oregon, Roxanne was awarded an "Emerging Artist" title; this is a prestigious and highly competitive award. Her work has recently been published in the book, 500 Animals In Clay: Contemporary: Expressions of the Animal Form. Recently an Artist In Residence at the Bemis Center for Contemporary Arts, she has also been a resident at Oregon College of Art and Craft and Watershed Center for Ceramic Arts. Jackson teaches ceramic sculpture at Portland Community College and Oregon College of Art and Craft. She is also a part of a collective artist studio in Portland, Oregon. |
