Inter-Tidal
is born from a mix of influences; the seasons, seashore environments,
moon cycles, cycles of my mental states, cycles of the day, suburban existence,
the monotony of daily tasks, isolation. The material for the large-screen projection was gathered throughout the workweek, during my time “on shift” (being a chauffer for my children, running errands, etc.), and during my time “off shift” (night time). The small screen images document places of habitude in and around the home that are forgotten in the hustle-bustle of everyday life (much like tide pools during high tide). Places that seem more exposed and strangely expectant without any human presence. The audio is derived from the sync sound of the video taping process. Processing is largely a result of manipulations of the associated video clips. In the case of the small screen projections (4 of six) the audio is also derived from sync sound and presented in an intimate ensemble format. As video artist, composer and flutist, Daniel Heila’s work embraces live musical settings, electro-acoustic sound design and projected video as well as traditional format moving image art, sound art and installation. As a full time father, his praxis is intimately entwined with the ebb and flow of domesticity. Though educated in classical music performance, concert composition and electronic music Daniel is largely self-taught as a contemporary musician and visual artist. “My involvement in academy has been a way to buy free time and access to resources. It has never seemed to me to be a place that supports original creative efforts in contemporary arts.” Actively involved with the local art scene, Daniel is the coordinator of the Media Arts Committee of the DIVA Center in Eugene, Oregon. |
